Coyotes in the City - a time for Precaution not Panic
There have been sightings of coyotes in the City of Cambridge, specifically in the
Cambridge Cemetery, Antrim Street, Wendell Street and the Third street areas. This
is not unusual since the normal range of a single coyote can be from 2 to 30
square miles. Coyotes have been established throughout most of Massachusetts.
Coyotes thrive in suburban/urban as well as rural areas, and will utilize whatever
food is naturally available, including small animals, birds, insects, fruit,
garbage, pet food, birdseed and compost. Never deliberately provide food for
coyotes.
To avoid problems with coyotes and to make property less attractive to them,
follow some basic practices:

Secure your garbage;
Don't feed or try to pet coyotes;
Keep your pets safe, especially cats and small dogs;
Keep bird feeder areas clean;
Feed pets indoors;
Close off crawl spaces under porches and sheds;
Cut back brushy edges in your yard;
Do not approach a coyote;
A loud noise or a bright light will usually scare a coyote away.
Coyotes are typically shy and elusive, but they can be seen individually, in pairs
or in small groups where food is commonly found. If you see a coyote that appears
sick or injured, contact the Cambridge Animal Commission at 617-349-4376. The
Environmental Police have jurisdiction over these animals and they would be
notified if the animal is determined sick or injured. Coyotes may sometimes be
seen during the day, though this does not indicate that they are sick or injured.
