Categories: General 8 Nov 2007 - 11:00am 13 Jan 2008 - 4:00pm Griffin Photography Museum 67 Shore Rd. Winchester, MA From the Griffin Museum website: IT'S A DOG'S LIFE: It's a collaboration like no other - William Wegman and his Weimaraners. First, there was Man Ray. Then came Fay Ray. And, a cast of beautiful dogs, with human-like qualities and dressed in a variety of costumes, followed. The traveling exhibition, a collaboration of the Polaroid Corporation and The DeLand Museum of Art, includes 29 photographs Wegman took of his beloved dogs during a 10-year period. "Wegman's work never ceases to be both humorous and touching. With his first faithful hound, Man Ray, he established his art on the platform of avant-garde aesthetics. The Polaroid Collections' It's a Dogs Life is a pleasing exhibition that represents Wegman's style and humor," explains Paula Tognarelli, Executive Director of the Griffin Museum of Photography. Wegman was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1943, and began drawing at age 4. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, in 1965 with a degree in painting and earned a master's degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Illinois in 1967. After teaching at several universities, his artistic interests extended to photography and the then-new medium of video. Wegman moved to California in 1970 and got a Weimaraner he named Man Ray. It was the beginning of a 12-year relationship, in which Man Ray became the central subject of Wegman's photography and videos. After Man Ray died, a female Weimaraner, Fay Ray, came into Wegman's life in 1986, resulting in a new collaboration and a new series of photographs, which he took with a Polaroid 20-by-24 camera. The photographs reveal the human-like and sensitive qualities of the dogs, coupled with Wegman's humor and creativity. The exhibition is sponsored by the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center of New England (VESCONE), Polaroid, Mullen and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
