Consumer Alert: The Latest on the Pet Food Recall

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 16 have died after eating the affected pet food.

For a complete list of brand names covered by the recall, visit the Menu Foods website. You can also visit the MSPCA website .

Below is a list of guidelines that concerned pet owners should keep in mind.

If you know for sure that your pet has been fed food from the recalled lots, you should have your pet's blood and urine tested by a veterinarian. This can be done at any veterinary hospital.

If your animal is showing signs of illness (most commonly: vomiting, lethargy, changes in water consumption and/or urination), and has eaten some of the recalled food, see a veterinarian immediately. Earlier diagnosis and treatment appears to improve prognosis.

All of the recalled food was available from December 2006 until mid-March 2007. If your pet ate the food before December, they are most likely not at risk.
