Re: Fenced Area at Fresh PondSubmitted by freshponder on 12 October, 2006 - 7:32pm. Categories: Cambridge Thanks for the great question! To date, the Water Board and Fresh Pond Advisory Board have said that they have not been able to find an appropriate space to fence as a dog run. This could be something we could take up with them more seriously in the future. That said, there is a definite plan (and funding) for a fenced dog run at Danehy Park. The funding of $100,000.00 (yes, you read that correctly) was included in this year's city budget so it has been set aside. The funding is so high because landscape remediation needs to be done so that the dog run is no longer an unusable swamp. Right now, the plans are being reviewed by the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) because Danehy Park is a landfill and they need to make sure that all plans are safe, both environmentally and for users. But we're hopeful that they'll approve the plans and it will move forward. You're right that right now, the only fully fenced dog run in the city is at Fort Washington. There will also be one at Pacific Street by the winter (near Fort Washington). In addition to those and Danehy, we're also working to find space in East Cambridge and finally, we're working on trying to establish some shared-use hours in which dogs can legally be off leash in existing parks. If you, or anyone else, would like to be involved in these efforts, either by attending meetings or helping with research and preparation (or even helping with the website or designing a logo), please email us at info@cambridgedog.org. Thanks! |
